Nexium, a drug used to treat heartburn and acid reflux, has been the subject of many studies. But how much is likely to be in the market?

The American Heart Association (AHA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimate that the risk of heartburn is about one to two a year, depending on the severity and the condition being treated.

The AHA and NIH recommend that patients with severe heartburn be given Nexium in addition to other medications.

“The most effective proton pump inhibitors are Nexium,” says Dr. Nachum Katzer, vice president for pharmaceuticals and diagnostics in the National Institutes of Health.

Nexium has been shown to reduce the risk of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and the symptoms of heartburn. Studies have found that the medication is also effective in reducing the risk of ulcers.

“The American Heart Association recommends Nexium, but we know that this drug is not the best option for patients with severe heartburn or acid reflux,” says Dr. Katzer. “We don’t have a drug to treat acid reflux.”

The AHA and NIH also recommend that patients who have GERD or ulcers take the medication to see if they are better on other proton pump inhibitors.

“Nexium should be used as directed by a doctor and is not a prescription medication,” adds Dr. “If you are experiencing any symptoms of acid reflux, call your doctor.”

While the AHA and NIH recommend that patients take the medication to see if they are better on other proton pump inhibitors, there are many other treatments available.

In 2007, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) recommended Nexium, a proton pump inhibitor, for use in patients with severe heartburn. However, a study conducted by the American Heart Association found no significant differences in the risk of ulcers between patients who took Nexium and those who had no other treatment.

Nexium is available in both generic and brand-name versions. The brand-name product should only be taken once per day, but the generic is not covered by the FDA. The drug should only be used with a doctor’s prescription.

Nexium is not the only prescription proton pump inhibitor available.

The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) recommends that patients take the drug daily for three days, and patients should continue to take the medication for three days after the first dose.
